About this print
The American wigeon is a grazing dabbler as much as a swimmer, often up on the bank cropping grass, and the drake is quietly smart: a creamy white crown, a sweep of glossy green back from the eye, warm pinkish-brown flanks. Its three-note whistle carries across the marsh and gave it the old name baldpate.
Here he sits among reeds in soft light, the white cap catching the morning. A handsome, slightly understated dabbler for a wall of pond ducks.
