Birds & Wetlands ("we", "us", "the journal") publishes the website at birdsandwetlands.com. This page explains what we collect when you visit, why, and what choices you have.
What we collect
We deliberately collect as little as possible. The data points that reach us are:
- Standard server logs — your IP address, browser, referrer, and the pages you request, kept briefly for security and debugging.
- Anonymous analytics — page views and aggregated session metrics via Google Analytics 4 (property G-ZQ6K62DL0H). We do not link this data to you personally.
- Newsletter address — only if you choose to subscribe. We use it to send you the newsletter and nothing else.
- Contact form fields — if you write to us, the message and any details you include.
Cookies & third parties
Birds & Wetlands uses Google AdSense to display advertising. AdSense and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ad Settings or via the EU/UK industry tools at youronlinechoices.com.
We also use Google Analytics 4. Analytics cookies are anonymised and used for traffic measurement only. See our Cookie Policy for the specific cookies set, their purposes, and how to control them in your browser.
Some of our older articles include affiliate links to Amazon and other retailers — see our Affiliate Disclosure for details.
Your rights
If you are in the UK, EU, or another jurisdiction with similar protections, you have the right to:
- request a copy of any personal data we hold about you,
- ask us to correct or delete it,
- withdraw consent for marketing emails at any time (every email has an unsubscribe link),
- complain to your local data-protection authority.
To exercise any of these, write to editors@birdsandwetlands.com.
Data retention
Server logs are retained for up to 30 days. Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Contact form messages are kept while the conversation is open and then archived; you can ask us to delete them at any time.
Children
Birds & Wetlands is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has submitted information to us, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy occasionally — the date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be flagged on the homepage for at least 30 days.
