About this print
The great egret was nearly lost. At the turn of the twentieth century its breeding plumes were worth more than gold to milliners, and whole colonies were shot out. Its recovery is one of conservation's quieter victories, and today it wades the shallows on every continent but Antarctica.
White birds are the hardest to render and the most rewarding to get right. Here the egret stays luminous and clearly drawn against soft grey water, never bleaching into the background. It is the natural coastal companion to the heron, and the two hang beautifully side by side.
