About this print
The canvasback has long been called the aristocrat of ducks: a big, fast diver with a rich chestnut head, a black chest, and a back so pale it looks like unbleached canvas. It was once the prize of the market hunter and the centrepiece of a grand table, and it still carries that weight of history.
Here he rides low on quiet water, that distinctive sloping head clearly drawn against soft reeds. A classic sporting subject that sits well in a study or a lake house among the other diving ducks.
