About this print

Sandhill cranes gather in numbers that stop traffic. Half a million stage on the Platte River each spring, grey and tall and faintly prehistoric, their calls carrying for miles. One bird alone, standing at the reed edge with a single red note at the crown, is stately in a way few birds manage.

This piece plays the long, calm vertical of the standing crane against a soft marsh. It anchors a larger grouping and pairs naturally with the heron and the great egret as a set of three tall waders.
